In Case You Missed It . . .
July 4, 2009
Each week I highlight recent performances that you may have missed. These stories include interesting stats and trends, major league debuts, recent rehab starts, minor league performances, hot/cold streaks, and so on. My ultimate goal is to help you identify players and trends that you may not have noticed.
Here’s what you may have missed this week:
1. Miguel Tejada is hitting .329. Is it for real? Well, his post-all-star break average over the past three years is an impressive .312.
2. Scott Rolen hasn’t had a major injury yet and is hitting .331.
3. Albert Pujols has 31 homers and is on pace to finish with 61. Oh, and he also is hitting .336.
4. Russell Branyan is on pace to hit .295 with 43 homers and 97 RBI’s. Say what?
5. Ben Zobrist has 16 homers and is on pace to hit 34.
6. Edgar Renteria is hitting .522 with 8 RBI’s over the past seven days.
7. Emilio Bonifacio – he of the strong start and subsequent vanishing act – has four stolen bases over the past week, but hit only .238.
8. Jair Jurrjens has a 2.73 ERA for the season, which is 8th best in the majors.
9. Zach Duke has a 3.27 ERA for the season (21st best in the majors) and has allowed less hits than innings pitched.
10. Josh Johnson is 15th in the majors in strikeouts with 97 in 114 innings pitched.
11. Gavin Floyd has lowered his once sky-high ERA to a respectable 4.33. He also has 85 K’s in 108 IP.
12. Brian Fuentes leads the majors in saves with 23. He has a 3.49 ERA, which is especially impressive given his 5.63 and 5.06 April and May ERA’s.
13. Ryan Franklin, considered by some to be a long-shot for the closer role in spring training, has an 0.84 ERA and 20 saves.
14. Bobby Seay (Carlos Marmol) leads the majors in holds with 17. Jeremy Affeldt and Matt Guerrier are in second place with 16 each.
15. Ronald Belisario, the pitcher on the Dodgers who you may have never heard of, has a 2.44 ERA in 45 innings pitched, and has let up only 37 hits while striking out 46. His ERA was 1.97 before a rough outing late this week.
16. Jason Marquis, Tim Lincecum, and J.A. Happ pitched complete game shutouts over the past week.
17. There were 28 blown saves over the past week.
18. Emilio Bonifacio and Chipper Jones lead the majors in Errors, both have 13.
