Minor-ity Report: Highlight on Ryan Strieby

June 2, 2009

Selected by Detroit in the 4th round of the 2006 amateur entry draft, Ryan Strieby is just the sort of prospect we covet at Minor-ity Report.  He is relatively poorly known by the  majority of Fantasy GM’s, and has a long pedigree of pounding opposing pitchers.  Let’s take a look at his numbers from college ’til the present day in double A (Eastern League).

At the University of Kentucky in 2006, Strieby slugged an impressive 20 homers in just 233 at bats.  His 46:39 BB:K ratio and .343 average testify to the fact that Ryan Strieby is more than a slugger, but rather a player with multicategorical potential.  Upon entering low A ball that same season during ‘06, Strieby encountered professional baseball for the first time and for the first time, hardship at the plate.  Notching a mere .241 average with only 4 homers in 224 at bats. Perhaps this harsh awakening was sufficient to prepare Strieby for the following season, because in 2007 held  his own in A ball (Midwest League) with 16 homers and 6 steals in 443 at bats.

So is 2007’s performance enough to launch Strieby to the top of prospect lists? No.  But 2008’s campaign more than cemented Strieby as one of Detroit’s top prospects.  Strieby posted 29 homers and a .278 average in 421 at bats while driving in 94 RBI.  Ryan Strieby showed the one thing that scouts and Fantasy GM’s concern themselves with most, the ability to adjust his approach and dominate after doing so.

To open the 2009 season, the 6′5 Ryan Strieby has belted 13 homers to go with 38 RBI and a .289 average in only 166 at bats.  In other words, Strieby is on pace to shoot past his previous homer and RBI totals, and appears to be walking more while whiffing less, always diagnostic of a maturing batter.  At 23 years of age, Strieby seems to be making a case for a call to the Bigs.  His biggest obstacle – Miguel Cabrera, the Tigers capable, perennial all-star third baseman-now-first baseman.  Should Strieby make it to the Bigs, a positional shift for either Cabrera or Strieby could be in order…or perhaps a trade. In either case, keep your eyes on the meteoric rise of obscure turned blue chip prospect Ryan Strieby.
